ARGO Medical Technologies - Paraplegic Manuela Migliaccio to Use Personal ReWalk™ Exoskeleton to Complete Lugano 5k Race

New phase for exoskeleton technology as Migliaccio is the first person in Italy to take home ARGO’s ReWalk

Milan, Italy - 10 September, 2012 - Exoskeleton technology leader, ARGO Medical Technologies announced today that Manuela Migliaccio will be the first person in world to complete a 5k race in her personal ReWalk exoskeleton technology.

Migliaccio recently completed training using the ReWalk model made specifically for institutional use. She now has her own personal device that she is incorporating into her daily life at home and using to train for the 5k race that will take place on 15th September 2012 in Lugano, Switzerland.

“The race course is an exciting challenge to complete in my ReWalk,” said Migliaccio. “But I am also excited to use it in my daily life to walk outside, talk to my friends and family face-to-face, and stand easily to reach high shelves.”

28-year-old Migliaccio, who was born in Naples, was injured in 2009 during a vacation with friends in Greece that left her paralyzed from the waist down. After recovering from the accident she went to a rehabilitation center where she learned how to adapt and live independently.

Migliaccio completed her ReWalk training at Valduce Hospital, Villa Beretta Rehabilitation Centre under the guidance of its Director, Dr. Franco Molteni, an expert in rehabilitation technology like the ReWalk.

“The ReWalk exoskeleton technology has been extremely beneficial to patients at our rehabilitation center,” said Dr. Molteni. “This unique exoskeleton device allows users like Manuela to operate and train on the ReWalk independently. I am proud of her progress and dedication as she aims to complete the upcoming marathon in Lugano.”

Dr. Molteni joined Migliaccio and experts in the field of exoskeleton technology as they unveiled this new phase of the ReWalk in Milan and announced her training regimen as she prepares to complete the 5k race in Lugano.

The ReWalk™ allows users like Migliaccio, who have lower limb disabilities, such as paraplegia, to stand, walk and climb stairs with the goal of restoring upright mobility, quality of life, and independence.  After users have been trained on the technology, they can walk independently using crutches for balance. Up until now, the ReWalk™ has been only used in rehabilitation facilities.
