Africa Health - Africa Health Congress to bring smiles to children’s faces with donation

Johannesburg, South Africa: Organisers of the recently concluded Africa Health Exhibition & Congress in Johannesburg have announced that a total of ZAR 202,600 was donated to the Smile Foundation in South Africa as a result of their pledge to donate 100% of the conference registration fees to the charity.

The Smile Foundation is a South African NGO that assists children with facial anomalies, to receive free corrective plastic and reconstructive surgery within South Africa. The foundation helps children who suffer from treatable facial conditions such as Cleft Lip and Palate, burns, facial paralysis (Moebius Syndrome) and other facial conditions.

Africa Health 2014 is an annual gathering of medical professionals from around the world who meet to debate, discuss, share experiences, and examine approaches to the region’s health challenges. The three-day exhibition and medical congress took place last week at the Gallagher Convention Centre and featured the latest medical innovations from 400 local and international exhibitors and hosted 140 speakers and more than 2000 conferences delegates who attended the 14 CEU conferences on offer.  

According to Hedley Lewis, Finance and Fundraising Executive Director, Smile Foundation, South Africa: “The Africa Health Congress’s incredibly generous donation will see the Smile Foundation together with the South African Academic hospitals assist 15 South African children with Burns , Cleft Lip and Palate and or other facial anomalies receive surgical intervention and support. The holistic support which is given to the patient and guardians includes psychological support as well as other auxiliary services.  On behalf of the children that will be assisted, we would like to thank Africa Health Congress for bringing smiles to children’s faces.”
